Cuando la hembra presenta el celo debe ser trasladada e introducida en la jaula del macho, el cortejo comienza casi de inmediato, el macho huele la zona genital de la hembra, la ronda, la golpea suavemente, intenta montarla repetidas veces estimulándola a la cópula.
Cuando por fin logra montarla e introducir el pene se da la eyaculación en pocos segundos. El macho cae de costado y emite un fuerte sonido o chillido. Parece un ataque, queda tieso y emite un fuerte chillido luego queda en silencio tirado sobre el suelo.
Algunos productores dejan la coneja por varias horas con el macho para lograr montas consecutivas y aumentar el porcentaje de preñez.
Es muy importante que el macho y la hembra presenten tamaño similar, o mejor aún si la hembra es de mayor tamaño que el macho. Esto es para evitar que los gazapos sean demasiado grandes.
